Summary: Residential Assistants are the initial point of contact for Karen's House either on the phone or in person. They respond to crisis line callers, provide support, and resources, and/or screen for shelter services. Residential Assistants also provide support and attend to the needs of clients and families residing at Karen's House. The needs of clients range from providing basic needs directly, such as personal hygiene, food, and/or clothing, transporting clients/families to appointments, or assisting if/when clients or families are in crisis. When not providing direct support, Residential Assistants may help with sorting and processing incoming donations, collecting/imputing data, assisting with cleaning/sanitizing of office and home, and prepping rooms/beds for new families. They may also provide additional support or backup to Case Manager, Child Advocate, and Program Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide trauma-informed direct services to victims of domestic violence abuse and their children including support, advocacy, crisis intervention, safety planning, parenting support, information, and referrals.
  • Assist with the daily living needs of shelter residents and families.
  • Conduct a shelter screening process over the phone or in person for those requesting shelter services.
  • Facilitate cooperative living, peer support, and residents’ participation in shelter programming.
  • Model and actively promote positive, nurturing interactions between adults and children in the shelter. Model non-violent conflict resolution and use non-violence forms of guidance.
  • Assist in the maintenance of client files, agency files, statistics, forms, and other record keeping as required.
  • Communicate shelter expectations to residents as outlined in shelter guidelines. Promptly address difficulties or problems that arise per agency protocol.
  • Complete all paperwork and enter it into the client records database by end of each shift.
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of shelter facility and residents through adherence to policies and procedures related to securing premises.
  • Clean/sanitize rooms after client/family exit. Prepare rooms for new clients/families.
  • Perform routine chore check and cleaning tasks assigned to ensure safety and cleanliness of shelter facility.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with emphasis in social work or one year of working or volunteer experience in a similar field.
  • Experience: Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite & ability to work on online platforms. Must demonstrate compassion and cultural competence, to understand and value clients’ unique values and perspectives.
  • Transportation: California Driver’s License, availability of automobile for business use, and at least minimum auto liability insurance as required by law.
  • Additional Requirement: Must receive clearance from the Department of Justice Criminal Record Offender Information database. Must be 21+ years old. Must be willing to become CPR Certified.

Physical Demands & Working Environment:

Environment: Shelter setting; occasional travel from site to site; occasional exposure to the sun, moderate heat, noise, dust, and fumes; stressful calls/situations.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in a shelter setting including occasional travel to various locations; sitting for prolonged periods; standing for brief periods; climbing 3-5 stairs; operating modern office equipment. Work requires lifting, stooping, bending, stretching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, reaching, and other physical exertion. Lift up to 25 lbs.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate the equipment.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
