On October 6, 2023, community members gathered at Visalia Rawhide's Valley Strong Ballpark for the 9th Annual Purple Party to raise funds for Karen's House. The top sponsors of the evening included American Pacific Mortgage: Brendan Farrell Mortgage Consultant & Candice Garrett Home Loans, First 5 Tulare County, and Tulare County Health & Human Services Agency.
The night featured dinner by Jack's Catering, a large silent auction, a wine toss, and mystery boxes. One lucky guest won the mystery box grand prize: a $1,000 gift certificate courtesy of Ashoori & Company Jewelers.
This year's event was especially important because it commemorated the 40th anniversary of opening the shelter. Since its doors opened in 1983, the agency has helped local domestic violence survivors and their children with navigating their journey to safety and healing.
Family Services' Board President Stephanie Amaral and Interim CEO Hannah Giles shared plans for necessary renovations to the facility that housed nearly 300 children and adults within the last year. "With your help, we can ensure Karen's House continues to be a welcoming, safe place for generations to come," said Giles. Family Services is grateful for the sponsors, auction donors, staff, board members, and volunteers who helped make this meaningful event possible.
Thanks to the generous supporters of the fundraiser, the first phase: the kitchen remodel, will begin later this Winter. "The kitchen is the center of the home, used daily by the residents, and needs to be functional. We are excited to share our progress with you," shared Amaral as she invited guests to contribute donations to reach this first goal. The kitchen will have new cabinets, an updated sink and faucet, countertops, and appliances.
Future needs include complete painting of the interior and exterior of the home, bathroom remodel, updated lighting, and furnishings in the bedroom and living areas.
