Staff Spotlight: Jannet

For the past 15 years, Jannet has dedicated her life's work to helping families impacted by complex trauma. Many of these families also face challenges such as drug abuse, gang violence, and domestic violence. Children growing up in such environments are six times more likely to repeat the cycle of violence in their future relationships. To break this cycle, our parent educators, like Jannet, intervene by visiting homes and teaching parents essential skills to create a safe and nurturing environment for their children.

Jannet's role involves empowering parents with skills they can directly practice with their children. Upon successfully completing the program, these families often experience reunification, allowing children to return to a healthier home environment. Jannet describes her work as both challenging and rewarding, making a difference in the lives of families, one lesson and one family at a time.

Jannet approaches each family with an open and compassionate mind. She emphasizes the importance of leaving judgment at the door, focusing on listening to the families' experiences. "Often," Jannet explains, "what I discover is that the adults also have a history of trauma and abuse affecting their ability to parent. We work through these barriers, one at a time, and progress through the lessons. In the end, they thank me and share their happy moments with me."
